2nd Editorial for October 7 The Frontier Post A tribute to General Kayani Through a press statement issued by the ISPR in Islamabad, the Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has announced that he will retire on November 29, putting all debates and rumors regarding future of the Army Chief at rest once for all. Indeed, it is a bold decision of a professional soldier that General had been throughout his career. After leading the Armed Forces for six years in the extremely difficult era that faced the most brutal and deadliest enemy, the Army Chief’s timely announcement has cleared the air in the federal capital. What makes General Kayani stand tall amongst his contemporaries that he always demonstrated his upright approach and commitment to the system he was supposed to work in. He had nicely wounded up his actions and the approach he adopted during his profession career with so many words that ‘institutions and traditions are more important than individuals’. In the recent weeks, media was buzzed with speculations of being given another extension in his service or he is being appointed as the Pakistan’s ambassador to the USA. The ISPR message reads that I (General Kayani) am grateful to the political leadership and the nation for reposing their trust in me and Pakistan Army at this important juncture of our national history." General Kayani’s message leaves absolutely no ambiguity for anybody to comment on. The man of principle that he is known for in his department, General Kayani rightly takes credit of leaving service when the country is firmly embedded with a stable political system based on the will of the people and a constitutional order is in place. He has said it before and is saying it again that the armed forces of Pakistan fully support and want to strengthen this democratic order—a feat not so many ex-services chiefs can claim to have worked so selflessly in the past. During his six years tenure, General Kayani demonstrated his courage and conviction time and again whenever the need arose to carry forward the mission of making Pakistan a truly democratic, prosperous and peaceful country. He handled the situation with great precision and great wisdom when in previous regime when the Memogate scam hit the racks. He never lost his cool even in the testing time during Pakistan’s hot pursuit against extremism. Apart from his unflinching support to the political system, he withstood the international pressure to uphold the supremacy and integrity of the Pakistan’s armed forces. His honorable exit has set a highest standard of professionalism hence deserves strong appreciation. General Kayani will bow out gracefully on November 29, 2013 but his departure has thrown a tough challenge to the political leadership to select his perfect replacement to lead the armed forces in years to come. We advise the government not to compromise merit and fair-play while handing over the command of the armed forces that are engaged in all fronts. Only honest, committed and dedicated command can steer the flagship of the country to safety.
