2nd NOTICE THE AUGUST 2013 GENERAL MEETING OF THE CHICAGO ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY August 9, 2013 at 7:00 P.M. at the ADLER PLANETARIUM Mid-winters on Mars - Life at Mars Desert Research Station Kent Nebergall Mars Desert Research Station Commander Kent Nebergall will speak about his experiences at the Mars Desert Research Station. The Mars Desert Research Station is a two-story simulated Mars base in the Utah desert that has helped NASA, universities, international crews, and others develop new methods and technologies for living on the Moon and Mars. Mr. Nebergall, an Astronomer on crew 32, was Commander of crew 124 in 2013 supporting work for NASA and the European Space Agency. Hear about the adventures (and misadventures) of almost living on the Red Planet. Kent Nebergall is the son of a former test pilot and an artist. He has been an avid follower of space technology since Apollo-Soyuz, when he was seven years old. In 2004, Kent won the Kepler Prize for Mars Mission Design from the Mars Society, and was later part of Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) Crew 32. He has done space technology and design presentations for Mensa, The Mars Society, The National Space Society, The Heinlein Centennial, the Chicago Astronomical Society, Worldcon, and the 100-Year Starship Symposium. Kent is also a NASA JPL Solar System Ambassador and in the Chicago Society for Space Studies Speakers Guild. This past February, he returned to MDRS as commander of EuroMoonMarsA, part of a series of missions done for a working group of the European Space Agency. Please join us for what promises to be a very interesting presentation at the Adler Planetarium on August 9th at 7:00pm. Enter at the south entrance. To enter the Museum Campus, you must exit Lake Shore Drive at 18th street and follow the winding road around Soldier Field to the Planetarium. Street parking is available. Parking rates are $2.00 per hour, payable at the parking kiosks. The parking lot may also be open, but usually costs $16. Or use the CTA. Red, Green and Orange Rapid Transit Trains cross Roosevelt Road (12th Street.) Now only the #146 Bus goes to the Adler Planetarium. Instead of turning on Balbo, southbound #146 service will remain on State until Roosevelt and will then make a stop at the Red, Green and Orange line station before continuing on to the Museum Campus. This will replace service previously provided by #12 Roosevelt buses.
