2nd team report Pocklington 2nds were hosts to Drax 2nds this week in league action and after finally winning a toss Pock Captain Dan Croft put Drax into bat on a brilliant looking wicket. Pock opened the bowling with Croft (1-17) and Eastwood (1-20) who both started well with the new ball and kept the scoring low as the Drax openers struggled early on. The early pressure paid off when Croft got the wicket of Drax opener Gee in the 4th over, well caught at gully by Geoff Woodward. Eastwood made the next breakthrough in the 12th over after Spencer (8) was superbly caught behind by Pock keeper Chris Gladstone. John Chaplin (1-24) replaced Croft in the 16th over and kept the pressure on along with Eastwood and got his rewards for some good bowling when he claimed the wicket off Crawford (10) just before the drinks break with Drax 49-3 from 22 overs. After the break Woodward (3-26) replaced Eastwood after he finished his economical 12 over spell and he and Chaplin bowled well without luck for the next ten overs as Drax continued to slowly nudge along the score. Callum Quarton (0-26) came into the attack in the 30th over to replace Chaplin and it was from Quarton’s bowling that the next wicket came when a mix up between the batsmen saw Drax captain Joyce (8) run out by the combination of Croft and Gladstone, the score 104-4 in the 34th over. Drax were really never able to push on and make the most of the pitch and nudged their way to 134-7 from 45 overs largely thanks to opener Slaywe (78*). Woodward claimed the last three wickets late on, two were clean bowled and one brilliantly caught close in by Isaac Green. After a wonderful tea Pock set about chasing their target in quick fashion and after Chaplin (56) was dropped early in his innings he took full advantage and punished the loose bowling scoring boundaries for fun and was ably supported by fellow opener Gary Milner (22*) from the other end. The pair raced to a 100 partnership in only 13 overs and looked set to knock the score off themselves, before Drax claimed their only wicket when Chaplin went lbw shortly after celebrating his first half century of the season which included ten 4’s and two 6’s. Gladstone (22*) came in at three for Pock to join Milner at the crease and the pair finished off the game for Pock within the next three overs as Gladstone hit four quick boundaries to seal an impressive nine wicket win for Pock. This was a great team display in the field by Pock matched by some great batting from the top order to give them a maximum 30 points from this week’s league fixture. Congratulations to this week’s Toddys sponsored man of the match John Chaplin for his all round effort of (1-24) with the ball and a breezy 56 with the bat. A big thank you to John Green for umpiring and George Baty for scoring. Pock are away next week when they travel to Rowntrees and Huntington.
