3. Archers Paradox, the novel. Introduction: Clement Sanderson. Karen is building a new FB page for this book blogging experiment. Apparently Susan Wang has wangled herself a character later on, but one should be careful giving someone like me permission (encouragement!) to make her namesake character bad. :-) SuLynn Wang from Hispaniola will push the meaning of the word, and give Big, Casey, and Dot all they can handle. Later. Heres todays introduction. Were not into the villains yet. Shamu Portland and the skinhead twins Bullet and Tracer McCann are coming up soon. - Jay. Clement Sanderson was raised in the swamp, poaching alligators and fish for his money. He had worked in the Everglades his whole life, but the black water scared him now, and he wanted to quit. He fell in the year before with high waders on, and they filled up fast and dragged him under. Fishermen in waders often drown when they fall. Out west the cold fast water pins a man down, sometimes in water so shallow he can touch the air while he suffocates. In the South the water is warm and slow, but sometimes deep. Clement sank down while the waders sucked up tight against him, too tight to pull off. His ears pounded in his head, his lungs burned, and the surface was way above him. But the gut hook knife on Clements belt was honed to split a gators belly like a zipper. He stuck the point in low enough on the left wader boot, and pulled up while the edge of the razor sharp hook cut the wader leg apart. It was his only chance. Then he bent and plunged the hook in the waders right leg, but the point bit too deep through the rubber. It sank through his skin, striking bone. He tried to work the blade free, as the steel edge scraped back and forth on the bone and made him gag. His lungs burned harder, and he started to choke, and finally there was nothing more to do. With both hands he jerked the hook up hard, and the blade sliced the muscle, skin, and waders open to the bone. Then the high rubber boots fell away and he screamed to the surface, bleeding like a gutted fish. A year later, his leg hadnt healed right, and he still limped badly. And more nights than not, he still dreamed about drowning in the black water, staring up at the sun through the dirty ripples. Now, on the old tram path, Clement was dreaming again. Like always, a cold hand yanked him down in the black water over and over. He tried to suck the air in hard, but like always, it choked in his throat and made his head pound. Then that cold hand jerked him awake in the black and the wet, and Clement knew he wasnt dreaming anymore.
