3 Tips for a Truly Thankful Thanksgiving By Contributing Writer, Sarah Outlaw Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! You get all the incredible food and fellowship without the stress of buying gifts. Preparing for Thanksgiving isn’t without its own set of stressors though! If you are hosting, it can be a whirlwind of activity. It’s easy to forget to be thankful! Here are some tips for staying focused this year! Pilgrim’s Progress (Remember Why We Celebrate!) This isn’t just for Christmas! Remember together as a family why we celebrate Thanksgiving. Remind your children why the Pilgrims left England and came over on the Mayflower. Take some time and read the historical accounts again and remind your family of the hardships the Pilgrims went through. They had much to celebrate on the first Thanksgiving! God had brought them through a season of incredible sadness and loss and they were finally able to begin building a life in the New World. Proper Planning (Don’t be a Headless Chicken!) Don’t wait until the last minute. Menu plan, shop smart by getting to the stores before the mad Thanksgiving food rush. Prepare what you can starting a few days prior to the big day. ---Pie crusts can be made and frozen. ---Bread dough can be prepared the same way. ---Peel and cut sweet potatoes and store in either a mason jar or baggies in the refrigerator. ---Blanch green beans and store the same way as the sweet potatoes. ---Prepare your turkey by either brining, marinating, or using a rub. Practice Patience (and Gratitude!) It’s easy to lose your cool when preparing for a big holiday. If your attitude is sending your family to head for the hills, you might need a heart check! Some things that can be helpful are a few deep breaths and a quick prayer for help and patience when dealing with family members and the unplanned, unexpected happenings that creep up. Start now, early on in November, writing down daily things that you are thankful for. If you have a gratitude journal, you are doing this already! Relax and enjoy your Thanksgiving! We all have so much to be grateful for!
