#3 of the 7 Most Common Sports Injuries: Hamstrings Strain. The hamstrings are the muscles of the back of the thigh. Their action is to flex the leg and extend the hip. Most commonly injured while running or sprinting. Treatment is much the same as that of the groin: ice 20-30 minutes on, 10 off, 20-30 minutes on, as needed in the first 24-48 hours. After 48 hours, use heat on the area for 20-30 minutes, perform light stretching and then ice for 20 minutes. A compression bandage can be used for support if needed.
