30 DEC 2014 TUESDAY EPISODE Rehash: Juan Miguel returns home in his heavy winter coat and scarf and is greeted squealingly by Mayita. She’s delighted that his long trip abroad only lasted one day, but sadly reports to him that Marichuy is blind. He says he knows. “You KNOW, and you LEFT?!,” sweet Mayita asks indignantly. He says he just found out, and now he’s back to get the whole family together as it should be. It sounds like a setup for the sort of Christmas special where everything is heart-warmingly resolved in time for the Grinch to carve the roast beast, but we’re probably in for a lot more gut wrenching before the heart warming. JM leaves his luggage in the foyer (I hope that mysterious manservant is around) and heads out in search of his One True Love. Marichuy and her sidekicks visit Padre Anselmo. He can’t convince her that all is not lost between her and Juan Miguel. Juan Miguel goes to the Velarde estate, still in the wool coat and scarf. He still wears his shirt buttoned only halfway up, but with the scarf tucked into the shirt, which is hilarious. I don’t think he’s all that familiar with winter clothing. Ceci must have cranked up the AC for some kind of Christmas effect, because she’s wearing a furry vest. Ceci tells JM why Marichuy pretended she could see, and that she’s out visiting the neighborhoodies. The weather is a lot warmer downtown, and Marichuy, AJ, and Cande sit outside the church. Marichuy thinks they should have brought the baby to visit the old neighbors, but Cande thinks it’s not a good idea with all the barullo (confusion, tumult) in the barrio. Marichuy hears JM calling her name and immediately lights up. He’s still wearing the coat and scarf, although the ladies look comfortable in short sleeves. Maybe he just hasn’t been hearing enough people say, “Juan Miguel, you look HOT” lately. He drags Marichuy away from the protesting AJ and says they need to talk. He runs his hands through her hair and looks at her with concern. Finally some new stuff: Patricio and Cecilia admire BabyJM and marvel at how lucky they are, that they found their daughter and got such a fabulous free gift with purchase. Pat looks very amused by JMito’s shrieking. The actor’s scenes with the baby must be a lot easier now that he doesn’t have to be so crabby all the time. Ceci tells Pat that JM returned and went to look for Marichuy. They hope those two crazy kids get it together so they will be happy. Marichuy tries to get away from JM. He says he knows that she is blind. She weakly tries to protest that whoever told him that was lying, but obviously knows that isn’t going to work, because she then starts listing every complaint she’s ever had against him as reasons they shouldn’t be together. She says he doesn’t care about her and the baby; he’s only back because he pities her. He says that isn’t true; he loves her. Naturally, Marichuy responds to a declaration of love by the man she readily tells everyone ELSE is the love of her life by freaking out and running into the street and flinging herself against a barely moving car in a way that couldn’t possibly have hurt, yet somehow knocks her out with a fresh new wound on her forehead. If she gets amnesia from that, I am going to do something drastic…like send her over to see Dr. Plastico on Tontas, since he told us just tonight that he is no fool; he DID NOT get his medical degree by correspondence (unlike our brainless beauty Dr. JM), and he isn’t going to fall for that amnesia crap. I love Dr. Plastico. Well, anyway, back in our own little trainwreck, Marichuy’s mind is venturing off to the land of the angels amidst flashbacks of her life. Apparently, as an angel you wander a corridor and stretch your arms. JM tries to wake her up. While she’s still lying on the pavement, Olga is already in the church telling PA about the accident. A huge crowd has gathered around. PA rushes up, and as JM has had no luck awakening Marichuy, he says they should call for an ambulance. You think? But no one at Televisa has taken note of my suggestion that telenovelas be used as teaching tools of proper first aid, so JM picks up Marichuy to carry her to the dispensario. PA parts the crowd and Olga accompanies them, but Marichuy’s personal assistants just stand on the sidewalk and AJ blames JM for the whole thing. Balbina and Onelia shake their heads at Marichuy and JM’s obtuseness, and hope that they’ve managed to fix things between them. Marichuy is in the hospital being examined by yet another handsome doctor. He doesn’t think the wound is serious, but says he needs to check for internal bleeding etc. Juan Miguel says the doctor must save her. That’s a special service you have to ask for specifically at the hospital. Juan Miguel takes Cande home and tells Pat and Ceci about Marichuy’s accident. He blames himself. There is much wailing and gnashing of teeth. They rush out. Marichuy lies in a hospital bed, still unconscious, with a neck brace and a whole lot of head bandaging. Padre Anselmo prays for her and tells AJ to remain hopeful. JM, Ceci, and Pat arrive at the hospital. Two doctors discuss her treatment in elementary and formal terms. I think maybe the red-shirt guy is an intern or something. They decide to canalizar (tube, wire…I think they mean they’re going to give her an IV, as opposed to intubating or whatever. I learn all my doctoring from TV) her to give her medicine and see if she will react. Mayita is in Twinkleland, which is decorated for Christmas. Granny Mariana tells the story of Scrooge (avaro = miserly), and wouldn’t pay his employee enough or get leñas (logs) for the fire in the office because he was tacaño (stingy). In Mariana’s version, the employee’s job seems to be beating a metal plate with a hammer. Anyway, Scrooge won’t let the poor freezing guy go home to his family, and he won’t agree to go to his nephew’s for Christmas dinner, and then late at night he’s left all alone in his house, and now that Mayita’s looking rather depressed Granny decides that’s enough of the story for tonight. She sends Mayita grudgingly downstairs to fold her clothes. The intern has Marichuy on an IV drip, so now they’re just waiting. Pat asks why JM says the accident was his fault. They take it outside. JM tells the whole story of his long and eventful day. The accident which couldn’t possibly have hurt is even funnier to watch in flashback. Pat agrees that it’s all JM’s fault. Ceci cries about how much her daughter has suffered. Pat crabs about how much damage JM has done to Marichuy and tells him to stay away from her. JM says he loves her. Pat doesn’t care, and he says he will make JM leave her alone. JM says he won’t give up on her. Pat threatens JM that when Marichuy wakes up, she will decide for herself whether she wants him to stick around! Take that, Juan Miguel! That sounds…almost reasonable! The intern takes Marichuy’s pulse by hand again. The doctors say they need to wait a bit longer before they can give an opinion. Let’s make sure we can watch the pulse-taking about seven more times first, though—it’s riveting television. Juan Miguel sits in the waiting area and morbidly moans to PA that Marichuy could die. PA tries to reassure him. Ana Julia looks all sympathetic and pats Juan Miguel’s arm and offers to get him tea. Ah, that’s her game. What a vulture (buitre). JM continues to blame himself for Marichuy’s (unlikely) death. The doctors think Marichuy is taking too long to wake up, and she may have a skull fracture, and if she continues in this state she could die. None of these musings seems to lead them to bring in any monitors, or do an MRI, or anything medical-sounding. Cande gets the medical nonreport on the phone (referring to Marichuy as her chaparra, which means child or little one) and tells Dora and Martirio that they’re still waiting. Why can’t Eduardo happen to be at the pool while all this is going on and we could drop in on him for awhile? The doctor takes Marichuy’s pulse again. Marichuy finally starts to move and wake up. She recognizes Pat and Ceci, thank goodness, and asks what happens to her. They tell her there was an accident and she remembers it and blames Juan Miguel. Oh, good grief, it’s not like he pushed her into the street. It should be obvious to her that she shouldn’t take off running when she can’t see. He tells her he loves her, which is what she really wanted, and she reacts like that? Something is wrong with her head, and it isn’t that superficial cut. Mayita gives Abuela Mariana a makeover. Abue doesn’t look overly thrilled with the result, but is just glad Mayita didn’t put her eye out with the mascara wand. She continues the tale of Scrooge. He locks the doors and goes to bed, but hears heavy chains dragging on the floor and is scared. His old business associate floats through the wall and tells him how he is being punished in the afterlife for his nasty greedy behavior. “¡Qué gachos!,” says Mayita (How unpleasant!). The old partner tells him he will be visited by three ghosts who can help him avoid the same fate. The old gruñon (grump) is scared and goes back to bed and hides under the covers, and Mariana goes on at great length but you all know the story. Moral is, you have to pay for your sins. Marichuy is crying, and Patricio tells her not to cry about that loser, but one of the doctors says, “let her cry; if you try to make her stop it will just stress her out more.” Marichuy says she’s not in pain but feels ataranta (stunned, dazed). Ana Julia eavesdrops as the doctor says that Marichuy is going to be fine, and she makes some expression but I can’t tell whether she’s happy or upset at that news. This girl is a mystery. Marichuy asks about Juan Miguel, and Ceci tells her he’s waiting outside. Marichuy says she doesn’t want him around Miguelito. AJ tells JM and PA the good news and manages to look happy about it. JM makes a big melodramatic scene out of wanting to go see for himself how she is. Avances: Marichuy keeps muttering that she wants nothing to do with Juan Miguel. He looks distraught. Ana Julia practically drools all over herself thinking of what a catch he is, and Marichuy doesn’t even want him. More doctors say that the accident may have worsened Marichuy’s blindness so that even an operation may not help. Pat continues to threaten Juan Miguel. Juan Miguel begs for Marichuy’s forgiveness.
