30 painful years have passed, and the deaths of as many as 16,000 - TopicsExpress

30 painful years have passed, and the deaths of as many as 16,000 remain unanswered as the result of one breathless night in Bhopal, India. The night of December 2, 1984, negligence and insufficient security measures on behalf of one company led to the deaths of thousands overnight and the deaths of thousands more over three decades--in addition to stillbirths, nonfatal birth defects, chronic illnesses and disabilities among other crippling maladies suffered by victims--as >30 tons of toxic gases poured forth into the surrounding environment from within inadequate storage, filling the lungs of more than 500,000 individuals in a matter of hours. To date, the scant recompense of the responsible party has not neared any amount that may conceivably administer to a fraction of the tragedys victims, and today these perpetrators sit comfortably within the bounds of international law that governs, and at times shelters, the operation of multinational corporations. Global movements today advocate justice for the disasters victims, but more importantly they strive for livable conditions for ailing victims and for those who continue to become afflicted by the biophysical persistence of these deadly chemical compounds in the STILL-unremediated source of the leakage and its surrounding environment. If you live or stay in Iowa City, or if Ive known you by its affiliation, Ive asked you to join the Association for Indias Development for a showing of the film below at its release. Admission is free, and the event presents an opportunity to engage the living history of our world, for the history of tomorrow will be decided by our actions (or lack thereof) today--for good or ill. Although I realize that this may not be everyones cup of tea, and that perhaps I have not been able to maintain steady contact with all of my invitees over the years, I hope that you will consider joining us this Thursday to witness the unresolved tragedy as it first unfolded. If nothing else, when the evening of December 2 strikes while we sit in our safe, comfortable, and happy homes, I hope that we all take a moment to consider those suffering globally who may not access even potable water or breathable air. I hope that we will consider Bhopal. https://youtube/watch?v=rO6xCAsv4s4
