31 Days Of Halloween 2014 #4: Silent Night, Deadly Night One of the craziest and most memorable horror films I saw when I was around 12 or 13 and used to walk down to this local video store that had a ton of horror films on VHS. They probably shouldnt have been renting me this stuff but I was just starting my horror obsession and this is one of the few that I saw back then that I still enjoy. This one always stood out, not only for having a killer Santa Claus, but for having a unique serial killer motivation and some memorable kills (A girl gets impaled on a deer head on the wall while topless). A little boy witnesses his parents killed by a man dressed in a Santa Claus suit and goes to live with a Catholic Orphanage. Between his psychological damage of watching Santa kill his parents and the nuns instilling nothing but fear and punishment in him until hes 18, needless to say, when hes asked to play Santa at the store he works in, he finally snaps and takes on the role of the Santa he knows. It is campy, it is twisted, it is still a damn fine horror film in my opinion. Where so many horror films of the time just simply showed off screen killings and the like, this one actually put some effort in its makeup effects and it really stands out because of it. Add in a creepy performance from the kids grandfather in the very first scene and that creepy ass Santa song they sing throughout, and the classic NAUGHTY! I still think this stands out a notch above the rest of the 80s horror. One of the few that I am surprised I still have a very vivid memory of the entire story pretty much. ***1/2 out of *****
