37 years ago...right about this time on August 16, 1977...I rode my Schwin Fast Back 5 speed with the big gear shift mounted on the frame down to Phillips Stationary in Midland Park, New Jersey with my friend Andrew Joseph and the idea of getting some Pop Rocks, Ompalumpas and some Big League Chew - it was a lazy summer day and together we able to scrounge up 75 cents and at the time...like today...the Macky had a serious sweet tooth. When we went into the candy store...the woman behind the counter was crying and she shakingly told us that Elvis just died. We were 10 years old and unable to comprehend what that really meant so we went about our candy purchasing mission as originally planned As we got on our bikes out front, we saw many more people visibly upset and it began to sink in that this was an important moment. So with Big League Chew in our cheeks and Pop Rocks popping away on our tongues, all the while with the Ompalumpas melting in our cut off jean shorts, we rode home singing all the Elvis songs we knew. It was like something out of the movie Stand by Me - Ill never forget that afternoon and the innocence of being a 10 year old in the summer time Now looking at this performance I realize why America cried that day - he was a great entertainer and a true talent musically Take a watch - the man worked hard for that paycheck and has forever earned my respect and admiration
