3am, youre walking through the streets on your way home. It doesnt matter why you were out, only that you were, that you are now here. As you walk you realise something, something that you cannot claim to very often when walking around in the city; you are alone. The roads are empty, the pavements devoid of foot traffic, there is an eerie silence and the only thing to provide you with some sense of solace is the stark glow of sodium street lights. Simultaneously you feel two fresh emotions; the first is confidence, for this is YOUR city now. Hell, youre going to walk down the middle of the road, just because you feel like it. Nobody will know. The second is paranoia; this one is slower, it creeps up on you. It starts with a quick glance over the shoulder, a double check to make sure of our absolute aloneness. But then it grows as things jitter in the shadows, darting movements caught in the corner of your eye and strange, proximal sounds blossom. You hold yourself a little closer, walk a little faster and then suddenly, youre home. You flop into bed (its been a long day) and marvel at how, even if only for a short while, you were one of the precious few awake during the witching hour in a city of millions.
