3rd & 4th May 2014 From this day on the weekend of the 3rd & 4th of May shall be known as the weekend of carnage. Where to begin? Saturday 3rd may 2014 Picture the scene…..mist slowly clearing to the sound of birds chirping happily in the trees, deer crossing the field pausing to admire the sun rising above the distant hills, the gentle breeze and hawks soaring peacefully in the fresh morning air…………..Then Tom Brown turned up! Having been absent for some time due to work and bagpipe commitments the club was graced by Tom (Barley) Broon, after a few cups of tea he pulled his model from the car and set up, no sooner had a visual c of g check been done Tom had his plane in the sky, but not for long….after a few circuits, loops and rolls Tom (whilst traveling very fast) thought it would be a good idea to put the sticks in the corner and perform a snap roll, it was at this point that the wing decided to part company with the fuselage, a 100 ft vertical decent then took place resulting in only a few broken bits (and muddy feet) Next up was Ally and his Acro Wot, the Elevator snapped mid-flight and it landed with a bit of a thump, off came the undercarriage but on the whole not too bad. The Club fixed wing trainer had the dust blown from its wings and was given a test flight on the buddy lead by Tom Wilson and Billy Dunn, happy to report all went well although Billy had to keep taking it back from Tom as Inverted full speed up the runway was….well wrong…Bad Tom Jim Kane strives for perfection with practice of the Silver routine; the manoeuvres were somewhat different to those described in the manual, especially the vertical spot landing?? Derek Henderson and Davie Cameron shoved the Helis to one side for a few minutes to have a shot of the club trainer; both seemed to be enjoying themselves, both more than capable of passing the fixed wing Bronze. Unfortunately the spotlight again falls on Jim Kane, taking his Stryker and putting it through its paces, Jim had a rare laps in concentration and watched helplessly as his Stryker spun a few hundred meters away and into the farmers field, not much damage to report and should be back up soon. THE MOLES HAVE RETURNED……..traps have been set so let’s hope it’s not long before we catch the little critters. Sunday 5th May 2014 The day to end all days……a misty morning which cleared enough so those that made it could enjoy a day’s flying, first incident of the day goes to our club Chairman Tom Wilson, flying his Heli slow and gentle (yeah right) Tom misjudged how close he was to the ground as he pulled out a manoeuvre, the sight of turf flying over 60ft in the air and a large crater in the runway coupled with a split in two Heli would have been enough to make anyone wince, not Tom however as I’m told he could be heard laughing before it even went in!! Next up for sacrifice was Billy Dunn and his B25 Mitchell, after a successful first flight in the morning Billy re fuled and took his position on the runway, full throttle and off he went, not for long though, as the B25 lifted off the left engine died tip stalling it and causing it to cartwheel along the runway and into the long grass, the Mitchell is gone…..long live the Mitchell. It was then passed to Bill Brown from the Pitlochry Club who wants to carry out the repairs. Tom Bennett had a flight with his plane, not long before everyone was looking at it wondering what the noise was, the covering was beginning to separate from the leading edge and was making a hell of a noise. The Heli hover patch was taking a good pounding with lots of club members getting some practice in. Oh and the mole that was giving us hassle on Saturday……. GOTCHA!!!!!!! Not great weather this weekend but some good flying going on, good to see that despite the weather we still get a good turnout. Also as a reminder for everyone our fixed wing fly in is now less than a month away, pass the word and look forward to seeing you all on the 1st June.
