4:00 am Farm Report They are arriving. I have set a place at the table for them. Some days they will sit there, other days they will walk with me through the house or travel in my car. They are included in my conversations with other friends, of course. And in my private thoughts. The small stack of colorful seed catalogs is growing daily. I want...I want ...to grow it all. The colorful photos pull me in. Eye candy for a gardener. Indeed, before I began writing, I was reading. Days to harvest, storing capabilities, easy to grow( I wish they wouldnt add that) and photos designed to make me long for spring. As if I do not not... I thumb through the catalog on top of the stack. I feel caught by desire and reality. I did not plant garlic bulbs this fall. What if the farm sells? I couldnt bear to leave all my garlic behind. I want...I want...to grow it all. But I wont. What if the farm doesnt sell? And I didnt plant? The catalog sits to my left, luring me into its pages by long rows of perfectly planted greens. The potential of a bountiful harvest calls to me. I want it all. I look again at the cover... I think about the milkers already moved off the farm. I think about our contingency plan for the equines in case the farm sells and stalls need to be built... Somewhere on some farm... There will probably be no garden here. I write these words boldly. Now I feel a bit anxious.. I turn the catalog over to hide the cover from my eyes. A brilliant photograph calls to me... I feel the pull to open the book... I think I need to find some way to plant a few things. Maybe pots that can be moved.. Maybe I will turn an old trailer into a portable garden.... Maybe I should check out the easy to grow section after all. Maybe I should just put these catalogs away... But I wont. I cant. What if the farm sells soon? I need to be ready. Just look at those beautiful beets...the luscious chard and the length of those carrots... I want it all.... Darn seed catalogs... Im off to the barn. Ill be back later.
