4:16 AM and the smoke detectors go off, all six of them! We get - TopicsExpress

4:16 AM and the smoke detectors go off, all six of them! We get out of bed and start checking things, even to the extent of going out side and checking the roof and vents for tell tales signs of smoke. About 20 minutes later we get back into bed, turn off the light and BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Aughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Why do they always go off at such an ungodly hour? We get back out of bed start looking around again and find nothing, So, we decide to check on-line to see if theres any info and find out you should vacuum off the dust weekly because small bugs or spiders can make them go off. So, I break out the vacuum and clean five of the six; number six is about 12 feet up and requires the extension ladder. About 45 minutes later and were back to bed, this time with Scotty as he was a little nervous about all the loud squealing beeps. A little after 7:00 and Scotty wants to go out. I put him out and climb back into bed, three minutes later and the damned smoke detectors go off again, this time for about 30 seconds. Thankfully Scotty was still outside. The first time the battery went out on one, it freaked our Sheltie Cosmo out pretty bad, and it was like 2:30AM. A few years later it was the same story! How many people know youre supposed to change your smoke detectors after ten years? Some states have laws requiring them to be changed! Did you know that? Yup, it seems smoke detectors have a ten year shelf life and after ten years their reliability plummets....thus the laws. Ours are at least 12 years old, so I guess Ill be heading out to get a six pack of new detectors! Now I need to decide to go with the ionization type of the photoelectric type... FYI - Ive researched the crap out of them. dont buy the single units from contractor packs that they sell on Amazon...just read the reviews! If you read the reviews for the six pack sets they get like 4.5 stars vs like 2 stars...
