4 April 2014 For immediate release Creative Chiang Mai (CCM) - TopicsExpress

4 April 2014 For immediate release Creative Chiang Mai (CCM) is an idea, vision and initiative to promote creativity and innovation in Chiang Mai. CCM’s mission is to promote Chiang Mai as a Creative City, special economic zone and creative hub. The aims are to generate economic development and diversification, attract new investment, and create new jobs and opportunities. The initiative is coordinated by the “Chiang Mai Creative City Development Committee” which was established by the Governor of Chiang Mai in August 2010. The Committee is a think-tank, network and sharing platform. Its members include 50 representatives from the academic, private and government sectors (including NOHMEX, CAMT, TCDC, DITP, etc.). However, many other organizations, companies and individuals join or independently organize activities and projects to promote the idea. All do this on a voluntary basis. It is a local initiative - not a government funded entity. The secretariat of Creative Chiang Mai is the Chiang Mai University Science & Technology Park (CMU STeP). Creative Chiang Mai is not a project, but a long-term vision and network of people and organizations that work together to achieve this vision. Creative Chiang Mai encourages everybody to take action and work together to continue improving Chiang Mai as a place to live and work. In order to more clearly explain Creative Chiang Mai, the website has as well as the logo and other marketing materials have recently been updated (creativechiangmai). The new website was launched on 1 April 2014. As part of this update, the name Chiang Mai Creative City was shorted to “Creative Chiang Mai”. The shorter term is broader and, well, shorter and easier to say and remember. Our website (creativechiangmai), our main Facebook page and some other places always used this name (facebook/CreativeChiangMai). To promote the Creative Chiang Mai initiative, Chiang Mai University, agreed to support an annual event which after discussions with stakeholders and partners became the Southeast Asian Creative Cities Forum. Early on, it was decided to link this event to one of our flagship projects “handmade-chiangmai” (handmade-chiangmai) and make it an integrated two-day seminar and workshop with a press conference. Handmade-Chiangmai, is a collaboration between the British Council (Thailand) and Creative Chiang Mai. Now entering its fourth year, the collaboration focusses on crafts and other creative industries [for further details, please refer to the Handmade-Chiangmai Phase 3 press release]. The Southeast Asian Creative Cities Forum & Handmade-Chiangmai Seminar is the first meeting of representative of creative clusters, organizations and cities from ASEAN countries. The Forum is joined by representatives from CEBU (Philippines); Bali, Bandung and Jakarta (Indonesia); Hanoi (Vietnam); Kuala Lumpur and Penang (Malaysia); and Bangkok, Chiang Mai and other cities in Thailand. In addition, representatives from Hong Kong, the British Council (from Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi and Bangkok offices), UNESCO, TCDC, SIGA (Chulalongkorn University) are joining the panel discussions and workshops. The objectives of the forum are to share knowledge, discuss cooperation, and launch a regional network of creative cities and clusters (with partners from other regions). Following the Southeast Asian Creative Cities Forum & Handmade-Chiangmai (Phase 3) Seminar on the 3rd and 4th of April, there will be an exhibition in the TCDC Exhibition Center until the 11th of April. At the exhibition, slides and materials from the event, the result of Handmade-Chiangmai, the Dream City by Meedee Depot, other projects and events, and some TEDxChiangMai 2013 and CNXP 2013 talks will be shown. It is a good opportunity to find out more about Creative Chiang Mai. The Chiang Mai Awards (CDA) is another regular activity by Creative Chiang Mai. Now in its third year, the CDA aims to promote designers, good design from Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai as a whole. The CDA 2014 is open in six categories until May 6, 2014. Awardees will receive various benefits including free consultation, exhibition space and national and international marketing support. There are many other projects, events and activities organized or supported by Creative Chiang Mai or the members of the network. The biggest creativity event in Thailand will undoubtedly be TEDxChiangMai 2014. For those who missed the event last event, all the talks are now online and there is a large deposit of photos form this amazing creativity and idea forum on flickr. This year, TEDxChiangMai will be on of September 6, 2014 and the event’s capacity will be increased to 650 seats (tedxchiangmai). The ticketing process will be started within this month.
