Photo/File A fourth police officer succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at Emali hospital following a grisly accident, in which three policemen were killed on the spot by a speeding motorist on Tuesday night on the Emali-Loitokitok road. Administration police constable Irene Nchari, who was attached to Merrueshi Police Post, died at 3am even as doctors were monitoring her condition after a procedure in which one of her legs was amputated. Nchari was one of five police officers manning an allegedly ungazetted roadblock some kilometers from Emali town during the 9 pm grissy accident. The fifth officer, a woman, who was also injured in the accident was Wednesday morning rushed to Nairobi West Hospital in the city after her condition deteriorated, a senior police officer in Emali said. The area OCPD Gregory Muganda said the five officers who had erected the roadblock retreated into an iron-roofed makeshift house were warming themselves when an unmark Nissan saloon car rammed into the makeshift house killing three officers on the spot. However Deputy Inspector General of police Grace Kaindi denied that the officers were manning a roadblock adding that the officers were killed when a car rammed into their house. The officers were not manning a roadblock. They were in their house when a motorist lost control and rammed into the officers house. Kaindi said. There is however no police line in that particular area where the accident occurred. A senior police officer who sought anonymity told the Star that the roadblock is not gazetted. It is not clear why the police officers have erected the roadblock over 90 kilometres away from Mashuuru divisional police headquarters. The driver of the killer vehicle was reportedly arrested in Kilome while the passengers in his car (a man, four women and two children) were admitted at Kilome Hospital in stable condition. Kajiado county commissioner Harsama Kello who confirmed the incident said the car was speeding from the Loitokitok side towards Emali when the incident occurred but not even eyewitnesses could get the registration of the vehicle. “That was a shocking incident and as I speak, I do not understand the motive behind the whole saga because even the driver of that car was supposed to have died in that grisly incident. You cannot imagine the passengers in that vehicle could have survived but they moved on as they escaped,” said Kello. Kello said the first three bodies have been taken to Machakos Funeral Home Mortuary.
