4. X-Men: The Last Stand When it comes to the X-Men films, reactions usually go something like this: “that wasn’t bad” (X-Men), “MORE! MORE! I NEED MORE! (X2), and “OH DEAR GOD, KILL IT WITH FIRE! (X-Men: The Last Stand). And even that last one is kinder than what most people have to say about X-Men Origins: Wolverine. X2 turned out to be incredibly successful and Bryan Singer was set to go even bigger for the third film by adapting the classic comic book story, “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” which would have set up a three-way battle between the X-Men, the Hellfire Club, and the Brotherhood over the Phoenix. But 20th Century Fox was a little less interested. They hadn’t even made it clear if they actually planned on making another X-Men film, probably due to reactions to some of their other superhero endeavors (Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Elektra). At this point, Warner Bros., whose recent attempts at resurrecting the Superman franchise had failed, asked Singer if he wanted a crack at it. Given that Superman: The Movie was one of his favorite films, Singer jumped at the chance. Proving that studio executives are pettier than teenage girls, Fox terminated Singer’s deal, which also ended development on his remake of Logan’s Run, and said that they would release X-Men 3 to compete with Superman Returns. They hired Matthew Vaughn to direct it, who cast Kelsey Grammer as Beast and Vinnie Jones as the Juggernaut, but he dropped out of the production because he was cautious of Fox rushing production and knew there was no way a movie could be made that rivaled X2 with that amount of time. Brett Ratner was brought on to replace Vaughn and quickly proved him right by making one of the worst X-Men films to ever grace the screen. Apparently, Fox has realized their mistake and now Singer is back with the franchise and directing X-Men: Days of Future Past. We can only hope the time travel involved in the movie will erase both X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine from the time-space continuum.
