47 years ago today- June 27, 1966-at 4:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. "Dark Shadows", a gothic soap opera, debuted on ABC television network. The show was created by Dan Curtis. The story bible, which was written by Art Wallace, does not mention any supernatural elements. It was unprecedented in daytime television when ghosts were introduced about six months after it began. The series became hugely popular when vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) appeared a year into its run. Dark Shadows also featured werewolves, zombies, man-made monsters, witches, warlocks, time travel, and a parallel universe. It went on to spawn two feature films ("House of Dark Shadows"{1970} and "Night of Dark Shadows"{1971}) and a Tim Burton abomination in 2012. (Thanks to John Kwiatkowski for the notes and image!)
