477 years ago today, at 2 oclock in the morning on Friday 12th October 1537 at Hampton Court Palace, Jane Seymour was finally delivered of a son- the future king Edward VI. The young prince was born after a long and difficult labour, lasting two days and three nights. However, Queen Jane, appeared to recover quickly from the birth, and she even sent out personally signed letters announcing the birth of her and Henrys son. a Prince, conceived in most lawful matrimony between my Lord the Kings Majesty and us. In and around London the Church bells pealed in celebration, Te Deum, was sang in parish churches around the country and bonfires were lit. In the city, the merchants gave out fruit and wine, whilst German merchants gave wine and beer to the poor. The the happiest of days was ended by two thousand rounds being fired into the sky from the Tower of London. It was a day of celebration, not only for Henry and Jane but also for the country.
