4th day of Jeremiah class and yes we had tackled chapters 15-20, Praise God. Chapter 20 of Jeremiah explained some contradicting thoughts of Jeremiah himself. This maybe the result of an unfulfilled longing to be heard or to be listened to what he was prophesying to Judah. He would declare God’s greatness in one verse and he followed it by the cursing of the day he was born. In reflection to this unusual time in Jeremiah’s life, I would say that it is the pride within him, or the fear and anger towards Judah that made him cursed the day he was born. What I want to imply here is, Jeremiah knew that despite of the persecutions he is receiving from the people he was prophesying with, even from PASHHUR, the priest, which is very inappropriate to be treated as a prophet of God, Jeremiah still was amazed on how God could actually protect him against the disaster planned by God. He is so ashamed of himself maybe for thinking and doubting that God would not deliver him from the coming disaster and destruction, to the point that he has no face to present to God and rather chose to die. This is also very true to my experience as a church leader. I have often times doubted the greatness of God and trusted my own ability, maybe to impress someone or to convince myself that I am fine of doing my own way. But then, when God reveals His glory and mightiness in what I am doing, it reminded me of how nonsense my thoughts are compared to what God is setting before me. It is like then God is telling me, “See, you boy of little faith, what are your wisdom and confidence compared to me”. And so I would just respond to God, “Lord, who am I that You are mindful of me?” I believe when Jeremiah cursed the day he was born, just describe on how the Glory of God could actually humiliate him because God is greater than what he thought. May this experience of Jeremiah would be a living testimony to all those who are still keeping the pride in their hearts and not willing to surrender everything to God. AMEN
