What energy, what commitment!! 21 Oct 2009 By Charles Voogd Format:DVD If theres one DVD to be imagined that can win youngster for classical music, this is the one! Why? I live in a fairly prosperous city with a symphony orchestra of its own. Its a big budget orchestra with 100+ players. In the 1950s and 1960s this orchestra was famous (under van Otterloo) and later under Svetlanov it enjoyed a small renaissance. Nowadays many older people say goodbye to city life and theyre replaced by younger people from Turkish and Moroccan decent. They dont think about, know, care for classical music and so the annual amount of visitors for the orchestra has dwindled from 78,000 to 47,000 in a few years. The concerts I visit are very very quiet. Spooky. Last time I wondered: what could really challenge this orchestra, this city? They get their monthly payment, theyre subsidised (5 million euros for 2 years), they look a little bit bored with the music, I never really see them laugh or enjoy their work... Now have a look at this DVD and these young people and youll have to admit therere still youngsters whore very determent to make a career in classical music. They play and enjoy themselves like hell and you smell the kind of life enjoying urgency to make the best of things possible. Which is, I think, harder in Venezuala than over here. If you compare things I think my home orchestra is a Museum for Ancient Art with the smell of rotting mushrooms and these Venezuelan youngster propel music right into the 21st century and all I see are bright colours, enthusiasm, making the most of your life, devotion, hope, perspective and all other positive things. And after all if that, imagine!, this has been filmed in a museum-like atmosphere the Beethovenhalle in Bonn, for all sake, is....
