5,000 PDP members defect to APC in Imo by George Onyejiuwa No less than five thousand members of the Peoples Democratic Party at the weekend defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The mass defection was the major highlight of the civic reception held for Senator Osita Izunaso by the Orlu senatorial zone. The ceremony held at the Orlu Township Stadium in Orlu Local Government Area, was witnessed by national leaders of the APC, including the National Vice President Southeast, Dr. Anyim Nyerere, National Organizing Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso, Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Senator Chris Ngige, among others. Addressing the party faithful, the chairman of the occasion, Senator Ngige, urged the entire people of the senatorial zone and the state to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), alleging that the ruling party had ruined the country’s economy through unmitigated corruption and bad leadership. “The people of Orlu zone and the state should dump the PDP because it has brought hardship to the people through their bad leadership and corruption. So if you want to enjoy good health, quality education and other good things of life, join the progressives today”, he admonished. Also speaking, Dr. Louis Obodo, who led members of the Integrity Group, a political pressure group, to join APC said their decision to dump the PDP was as a result of the goodwill and success of the Okorocha-led administration. He pointed out that he was attracted to the APC because of its ideals which have promoted internal democracy and raised the hope of a level playing ground for members.”I left the PDP because of injustice which is not in the APC”, he said. The medical doctor, who was denied the ticket of Oguta/Ohaji-Egbema Federal Constituency by the PDP in favour of Gerard Ironna in 2011, said he led members of the Integrity Group to the APC because of his conviction that the platform would give Ndigbo national leadership. While receiving the defectors, the State Coordinator of the APC, Marshal Okafor Anyanwu, congratulated them for embracing change and progressive ideals, adding that the party would provide equal opportunities for all.
