5 4 3 2 Stop! You probably noticed ‘1’ is missing, and expected because it is the ‘supposed’ norm; same as ‘testing 1 2… What makes them the norm or the expected is that someone started them and they stuck. In these cases, they are not harmful, but somewhat helpful, one a noted countdown and the other a noted way to test a microphone. When you hear someone use anything different, even if it’s cool, it may take a minute to get used to it or accept it. The point is, though there are no laws set in place insisting that these formats are the only ones that must be used for countdowns and microphone checks, we have become ‘comfortable’ with them, they are ‘familiar’ and genuinely harmless, but that is not the case with everything we are ‘comfortable ‘ or ‘familiar’ with as it is also not the case with the attempts to change them. Some things we consider harmless because they have become the norm need to be checked to see if they are truly harmless, and might need to be changed. The attempt to change some must also be done with care, not just because one can, but because it betters what was or clarifies an error in what has been deemed harmless. Countdowns have been changed by some to ‘3 2 1’, maybe because the extra 2 numbers make the countdown too long, but it really does not hurt anything. In the attempt to be pious or not really thinking of what one is doing, some have used the letters of the LORD’S NAME for countdowns. For example cutting cakes, hmm, ‘J-E-S-U-S!’. To me that is down right belittling the NAME, what does HE have to do with cakes? Will one use his earthly father’s name to cut a cake just because it has 5 letters? Of what significance is that? It erks me when I hear it and I pray it does not become the comfortable familiar norm…≈KDL®™©2014
