5 Day Black & White Moving Image Challenge - Day 1 Rachel Wei - TopicsExpress

5 Day Black & White Moving Image Challenge - Day 1 Rachel Wei nominated me for the 5 day B&W challenge. Since I usually occupy myself more with cinematography than photography I thought I would add a little twist to the challenge: my intention is to post 5 black & white cinemagraphs: moving images as it were. Given the time it takes to create these things it probably wont be 5 consecutive days though :-) The first one is a black & white re-interpretation of a time lapse shot that I did originally for my Chronosphere video. If you have been following my work, youll know that I like to come up with new techniques if need be, if I cant realize the vision I have in my head using existing techniques. In this case I wanted to create the look of a long exposure photograph, but in motion. It was one of those things that sounds fairly straight forward, but when you start thinking about how to realize it, its not obvious at all, and required a fair bit of experimentation. The result was long exposure time lapse photography. I wont bore you with the technical details though. To turn this shot into a cinemagraph I separated the clouds and the buildings and looped them separately, at different speeds. This creates various changes in the light within the scene, in a way that is very similar to what was happening in real life when I shot this. It much more interesting than just creating a loop of the whole shot, which will look repetitive and unnatural. Hope you like this first post and stay tuned for more. PS: the video quality here on FB looks like crap. Ill upload it on Google+ as well, hopefully it will look better there :-/
