#5 Frankie and Johnnie were lovers . . . A great song . . Hunter and Jagger were closer but it took some getting used to. Jagger was 4 when Hunter came home that day and he was the dog that admired the new member . . but being a Border Collie . . Guardian of the herd from .. from oh yeah the foxes and wolves . . he was a bit confused. He would look at Hunter then me, then Hunter again . .. Kind of a . . . Perplexed look kind of speaking. . “He’s not a dog Dad!” “Look . . . Smell” “He’s NOT A DOG !” I wondered at first if Jagger would ever relax around Hunter . . . But he did . . He, like I, Fell in love with the kind and loving giant. I thought as first it was a jealousy thing . .. Jagger would catch the tennis ball return it to me, get praise for the catch and the return .. Hunter would watch and wag his tail . . . He would eventually get his squeaky toy and I’d throw it and yes he did the Jagger thing . I just thought he was looking for the praise. All the time they were together they grew closer. They would often chase each other then exchange toys and chase again . . . Hunter could have won the game a any time but he chose to play. He loved Jagger and never let his “Brother” down. He never let Jagger go to sleep without a good night kiss. He was a true Beta wolf . . The Nurse mate but beyond that he loved Jagger. All this time unknown to me a pack was formed by Hunter’s direction . . and I was privileged to be the surrogate alpha. I just thought it would be another coming home on Friday night . . . Jagger wasn’t there and Hunter let me know. Bev told me that he was at the vet and would come home in the morning . . . it was routine. It was nothing at all for me to worry about. Hunter wasn’t convinced. He rarely slept anywhere except his bed but this night it was the floor next to my side of the bed . .. several kisses that night and a couple times I woke to see Hunter sitting up, his paws and face on the bed next to me . . . wide awake. What was up? Bev and her son had put a leash on Hunter and they looked guilty as I exited the Shower and Shave portion of my morning . . . Bev declared “we’re taking Hunter in when we pickup Jagger” I can’t print my exact words but they weren’t “Golly gee Honey, what did you do to my Border Collie and where’s Hunter going?” Jagger had been neutered. I know it is the right thing for a male dog. “It” extends his life, prevents unwanted little ones and calms his aggressive behavior. That is NOT TRUE in a wolf. Only the Alpha Male and Alpha Female mate and for life and only if they know there will be enough food for the children. Slightly better reasoning powers than their human counterparts. “It” also doesn’t “calm” a wolf’s aggressive behavior . . . it crushes his self image . . . I had read all those books and watched all the DVDs. I called the vet, he agreed but had been told it was my idea . . . We all slept well that night. Everyone was “Intact” . . . except Jagger and that was okay too . . he’d be fine. His “pack” loved him dearly.
