Update TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR THE U-S VIRGIN ISLANDS AS THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM BERTHA PASSES NEAR THE NORTHERN END OF MARTINIQUE At 5 pm today, the center of Tropical Storm Bertha was located some 299 miles east-southeast of St. Croix near 14.9 degrees north, 61.2 degrees west with top winds of 50 miles per hour. The tropical storm is moving to the west-northwest at 24 miles per hour. Bertha remains in an environment that is not favorable for strengthening and little change in intensity is forecast over the next two days. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles mainly to the northeast of the center. A weather station near the island of Guadeloupe this afternoon reported sustained winds of 35 miles per hour and a wind gust to 50 miles per hour. Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to produce rainfall amounts of one to three inches with larger isolated amounts in some locations. The territory remains under a Tropical Storm Warning. On the current forecast track the center of Tropical Storm Bertha will pass some 64 miles southwest of St. Croix on Saturday at 8 am. Tropical storm force winds associated with Bertha will arrive to the territory early on Saturday morning and last for about seven hours until midday tomorrow. The winds will be felt first on St. Croix beginning at about 5 am and eventually spread across to St. Thomas and St. John by 9 am. The highest winds expected on St. Croix are estimated at 44 miles per hour around 8 am on Saturday morning.
