5. Question: Deuteronomy.14:22 says, we must give 10% of our earnings as tithe to God. Is it 10% of gross salary or net salary? Answer: There was someone who prayed to God asking for $100.00 and promised to give $10.00 as tithe. He also promised to pay $100.00 if God gave him $1 000.00. As he walked after his prayer, he picked $900. 00. However, instead of paying 10% of $900.00 ($90.00) he thanked and told God that he was not going to pay anything to Him, since the $100.00 was already subtracted from the expected $1 000.00. If you are still battling to know whether tithe is 10% of gross salary or net salary it means you are still far from understanding the value of giving. That makes it difficult for you to tithe as well. The bible says, you should give God everything (e.g. Ananias and Sapphira). The principle of giving changes you the giver, it does not change the recipient. What should come first is God and not the bills. Remove the 10% right away before you start your budget. In the bible, offering was given outside before people entered the temple (called temple tax) and without it one would not enter the temple. You should not seek after satisfying your present needs at the expense of a brighter future through faithful giving.
