5 Tips to ensure a safe and happy Halloween Nothing’s worse than donning a zany costume and heading off with friends for a fun Halloween night only to wake up the next morning sick from, um, a little too much partying or (worse!) in the local police station. You can avoid such unhappy endings by following these five tips: 1. Dress sensibly: Avoid costumes that attract the wrong kind of attention. Never use a prop that can be mistaken for a real weapon or a costume that makes you appear to be overtly impersonating a police officer. Dress comfortably, with ease of movement, warmth and ample ventilation. 2. Be prepared: Bring a jacket, flashlight, comfortable shoes and a cell phone with emergency numbers pre-entered. Be sure you have a safe way home: Establish a designated driver. 3. Stick together: Travel in a group and watch out for each other. Don’t walk alone or approach a stranger in costume. Agree on meeting places and times before you leave. 4. Be aware and respectful: Obey all parking and residence hall restrictions. Be alert to your surroundings and who’s with you. If you’re hosting a party, be aware of who’s attending and what they may have with them. Don’t let anyone leave and drive while intoxicated. If you attend a party and the crowd seems sketchy or the vibe feels wrong, just leave. Trust your instincts. 5. Celebrate responsibly: If you’re of legal age and drinking, never leave your drink unattended, drink from a punch bowl or accept a drink from a stranger. To minimize your risk, pay attention, control the amount you consume, and avoid risky situations.
