50 YEARS OF THE WHO Following last nights gig at the Florida Room in Brighton, on 17 May 1964 The Who played again on the following night at an All Night Rave there. It was the Whitsun Bank Holiday in Britain and Mods and Rockers fought on the beaches. The Florida Rooms were managed by Bonni Manzi, known as Uncle and he hosted gigs by many of the great British jazz stars of the early 60s such as Humphrey Lyttleton and Chris Barber. Other bands who were regular stars at the Florida Rooms included Cyril Davies All-Stars featuring Long John Baldry and Rod the Mod Stewart. Uncle Bonnis favourites were Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages. One of the Savages was Paul Nicholas, later to play the part of Cousin Kevin in the Tommy movie. To see The Who play on 17 May 1964 would have cost you 1/6 which is about 8p in todays money. The Florida Rooms were loosely portrayed in the Quadrophenia movie where Jimmy Cooper swallow-dives off the balcony – although at the real Florida Rooms there was no balcony and there wasnt a neon sign outside.
