‘50% reduction in crop production likely in Bishnupur district’ With no rainfall received for the last many days in the state of Manipur, the agricultural land in Bishnupur district has become totally dried up, the agriculture farmers of the area has predicted 50% deduction in the crop production this year. Bishnupur is among the places where large quantities of crops are being produced all year round. Places like Toubul and Kwaksiphai produces large amount of agricultural products. However, due to the scanty rainfall received during the last couple of weeks, the lands where crops used to grow in abundance was seen all dried up due to lack of water. A number of vegetables are being produced in the area and being transported to Imphal for sale. These products include beans, cabbage, cauliflower, potato, brinjal, tomato, chilly and ladies finger etc. Speaking to the People’s Chronicle in this regard, K Biren, Junior Subject Matter Specialist, Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur, said that three schemes is being implemented in Bishnupur district under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana. The three schemes are National Vegetable Initiative for Urban Cluster (NVIUC), Technology Mission and Micro Irrigation. Under these three schemes a number of crops have been planted in large scale through construction of green house, high-tech greenhouse etc. a number of steel water tank has also been constructed for regular supply of water. But since there is scarcity of water, the production capacity cannot be pushed up to the maximum. If the concerned department provides water sufficiently, enough crops can be produced, he added.
