500 to benefit from Kisti charity......WELL DONE KISTI !!!!!!!!!!! At least 500 needy Gulu residents are tipped to benefit from a charity drive spearheaded by popular NTV journalist, Robin Kisti. The Login host, along with a group of other youths under their umbrella organization, Life and Hope, are organizing a charity drive to provide clothes and other basic necessities to survivors of the LRA war in the northern district. The campaign, dubbed Life & Hope Clothing Drive, started early this month following the NGO’s tour of Gulu to assess the impact of the 20-year Joseph Kony terror. “The situation on the ground is appalling. We were shocked because government and other NGOs have been painting a rosy picture of the rehabilitation process, yet it is the exact opposite,” Kisti said of the inspiration for the campaign. After the tour, the NGO quickly put up a notice imploring Ugandans to donate whatever reusable material they had. They also took the month-long campaign to schools and universities, with National Theatre being the central collection point. “We realized that clothing is the main challenge for Gulu people. We were shocked to see old men and women walking naked,” Kisti said as she joined a busy team of colleagues to assort the collected donations last week. Executive Director Julius Ssekajja explained why it was important to start up the campaign, the first of its kind since the NGO launched last year with a charity concert and massive street cleaning in the city centre. “We want to instill a culture of helping fellow Ugandans. Not all help has to come from foreign donors,” Ssekajja said of the charity, themed From Ugandans to Ugandans, and has a number of local partners. The NGO will this Friday hold an art exhibition at The Hub cinema to help raise money to facilitate the transportation and distribution of the more than 150 bags of goodies. And to beat the perennial corruption usually associated with distributing assortments to the needy, the NGO will physically participate in the process slated for June 13-15. “We are looking forward to comfortably dressing over 500 beneficiaries from three orphanages and the local community,” Kisti said. Later this year, the NGO hopes to carry out a similar campaign to collect food for flood victims in Kasese. There will also be a charity concert in November to raise money for construction of a foster home for street kids
