52 years ago today the #1 song in the nation was Monster Mash, by Bobby Boris Pickett and The Crypt Kickers (with Leon Russell on guitar), knocking The Four Seasons Sherry out of the #1 Billboard spot on Oct. 20, 1962, where it stayed for two weeks. Picketts father managed a local movie theater in Massachusetts, so growing up Pickett was able to see as many movies as he wanted, including all of Boris Karloffs films. Later, when he decided to become an actor, he learned to do different voices and Karloffs voice came easy (easy to believe. All you Boomers out there -- remember how we would try and imitate Karloff when we were kids? He was right up there with Ed Sullivan. My Karloff was pretty pathetic, but it didnt stop me from having fun doing it!). The BBC banned Monster Mash from the airwaves in 1962 because it was considered too morbid. The bubbling sounds came from blowing through a straw in a glass of water, and the sound of the coffin opening was made by pulling a rusty nail out out of a board with hammer. Boris Karloff loved this song, performing it on a special Halloween edition of the TV show, Shindig, on Oct. 30, 1965. You cannot make this stuff up. youtube/watch?v=FeZftK2kO6U
