54 years ago tonight - September 11, 1960 - Hurricane Donna was sweeping up from the south after having devastated much of Florida. Winds were on the increase in Norfolk overnight and peaked at 75 mph just before 7 am on September 12th. The Chesapeake Light reported a wind gust of 138 mph. The barometric pressure fell to 28.65 which remains the lowest ever recorded for any tropical cyclone in Norfolk. A portion of the large 60-75 mile diameter eye passed over Norfolk and Virginia Beach as Donna moved back over water.
