5948 miles. Some challenging, all good. Painted our names at Cadillac Ranch. Touched giant Sequoias and dinosaur bones. Hiked 5 miles barefoot in Yosemite, more in Great Basin. Saw stars unobscured by human light. Saw moonlight turn a lake silver. Saw the Grand Canyon at sunset from the South Rim. Saw a rainbow over the North Rim. Walked among millenia-old bristlecone pines. Hiked a glacier and a lava tunnel. Saw petroglyphs, cliff dwellings, and climbers halfway up El Cap. Climbed El Morro. Drove through Frankenstein lightning in an awesome high desert thunderstorm. Waded in the Pacific again. Waded in the Yampa, the only undammed river in the Colorado River watershed. Drove Route 66 and some crazy winding, dipping 2-lane roads with no other cars around for hours. Passed by the bright lights of the Vegas strip. Had a beer, a shot, and the best steak of my life in a Colorado saloon. Chatted with an old cowboy. Ate in another saloon with bullet holes in the ceiling, some recent. Visited the birthplace of the atom bomb. Stood on the brink of a meteor crater and the Flaming Gorge. Saw the sun set on a mountain and rise on it the next morning. Slept in one really crappy motel. Lost a hat. Stubbed a toe on each foot, one going, one coming back. Left our baby in Santa Barbara to chase her dreams.
