5TH PHASE POLLS: Assembly Segments of Kathua headed for triangular contest BJP facing stiff fight Observer Desk/ Jammu: As Assembly Election in Jammu Region enters its last leg of ongoing elections in J&K, focus has shifted to District Kathua which is spread over five assembly segments of Kathua, Hiranagar, Bilawer, Basholi and Bani. According to the political analysts there will be a triangular contest in all the constituencies of the district. In 2008 Elections, BJP had bagged three seats of Basohli, Hiranagar and Bani. Congress had one Billawar assembly seat and Kathua assembly seat was bagged by an independent candidate Charanjeet Singh. Before 1996 assembly elections kathua was strong hold of congress. The people of Kathua had never given preference to any particular political party but favoured candidates on individual credentials. In 2008 Elections despite surcharge atmosphere over Amarnath Land row, the people of Kathua assembly segment rejected BJP and voted in favour of an independent candidate Charanjeet Singh who defeated BSP Candidate Som Raj. Charanjeet Singh secured 19123 votes and BSP Candidate 16761 votes. The BJP Candidate stood at number four. During the current elections, sitting MLA is considered a down to earth man and people are more or less satisfied with the performance of Local MLA. This time Babu Singh of Congress is considered as a strong candidate who had won the seat in 2002 on Democratic Movement Party but later joined Congress and he became Minister. BJP Candidate is relying on Modi wave. As per the political pandits the main fight in this assembly segments is between sitting MLA and congress’s Babu Singh. The Basohli assembly seat which was bagged by Jagdish Raj Sapolia of BJP in 2008 elections defeating Devinder Singh of National Conference. BJP had got 16651 votes and National Conference 13770 votes in 2008 elections and congress stood at number three. During the current elections, with the joining of Jagdish Raj Sapolia in Congress, there will be triangular contest between Congress, NC and BJP. Bani assembly segment was bagged by BJP in 2008 elections. As its candidate Lal Chand had defeated Gulam Haider Malik of National Conference by a margin of 2249 votes. The Congress party’s Prem Sagar Aziz stood at number three. During the current elections, there is a straight fight between BJP candidate and NC candidate. The Billawar assembly seat had won by Congress candidate Manohar Lal Sharma in 2008 elections defeating Satish Sharma of BJP. Manohar Lal had secured 22262 votes, Satish Sharma of BJP had secured 13879 votes and NC stood at number three. During the current elections, there is a straight fight between Manohar Lal of Congress and Dr. Nirmal Singh of BJP. BJP Candidate Durga Dass had won Hiranagar seat in 2008 defeating independent candidate Prem Lal. BJP had got 19730 votes, Independent candidate 16993 votes and Congress candidate got 14113 votes. Durga Dass of BJP quit party and joined National panthers Party.During the current elections, there is now a triangular contest between NPP, BJP and Congress. All the five assembly segments of Kathua District are going to poll on 20th December and counting of all the 87 assembly segments will be held on 23rd December 2014.
