6 DAYS TO GO: Depicting Horses in the Indian Modern Fine Arts has been most closely associated with master artists Jamini Roy, Nikhil Biswas, Sunil Das & M.F. Husain, from the 1940s onwards. Each brought a different unique sensibility to their expression. Jamini Roy took his inspiration from the craft toys from his native Bankura (West Bengal) and created a stylized version of the horse which abstracted the essence and seemingly presented an image privileging the folk inspiration for the modern; for Biswas it was the obsessive energy rooted in the pen & ink medium which allowed the dynamic sense of combat and joy between man and horse to be dominant; for Sunil Das it was the lyrical and rhythmic movements of the horse, bull, even flamenco dancers which brought him fame during the 1950s and early 1960s with a focus on the charcoal on paper medium, even more so famous that the doyen of Indian modernism Maqbool Fida Husain, whose depictions of Horses, took from many sources of inspiration, from his childhood memories, especially the Tonga, to the great horse Dhuljanah / Murtajiz, belonging to the beloved son of the Prophet Mohammad - Husayn ibn Ali, and the story of his death during the Battle of Karbala, to horses at the Bangalore Races to the the Ashvamedha vedic rituals. The whole world was his inspiration. Please see two attached images of the Husain artworks featuring in the All Creatures Great & Small Auction Exhibition for your enjoyment.
