60 years ago this month, my family moved to Columbia. When we first moved to Columbia, we lived in a portion of the upstairs of the Walkden family farmhouse. The farmhouse burnt down this summer. Soon Mrs. Walkden became Grandma Walkden, her mother was Grandma Cartwright, Doris became Aunt DoeDoe, and Ruth was Aunt Ruthie. To pick up extra money, Dad would work part time at Keyse Sohio. Mom babysat Kenny and Kelly Walkden for many years. We lived at the Walkden’s for 3 years and then moved to Capel Road renting from Leon Ives. Marilyn and Shirley Ives babysat us. Eventually Mom and Dad bought a house on North Station across from the old post office. I babysat the children of Doug and Gene Keyse, Jerry Dengler, Aunt DoeDoe, Marilyn Ives and others. My brother worked for Keyse Sohio and I worked at 4 Keys Restaurant. I met my first husband at the restaurant. John and I graduated from Columbia. Moving to Columbia shaped my life and my brothers still call it home. Mom and Dad are buried in the cemetery. Although I didn’t start out there and I haven’t lived there for over forty years, Columbia will always be home.
