62% of Blind and Visually Impaired Individuals are Not Participating In the Workforce They say you need three things to get a job: the skills, the confidence, and the professional connections. As a former lab technician who had lost vision, Julianne T. had the skills, but a lot of uncertainty about working with a disability. This lack of confidence was preventing her from reentering the workforce. Julianne is not alone. An estimated 62% of blind and visually impaired individuals are not participating in the workforce. Many potential job seekers lack confidence, connections, skills, or all three. Lions Center is working to change that paradigm and empower the blind and VI community to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Through Lions Center Employment Services, Julianne redefined her values statement and developed her interviewing skills, disclosure strategy, and career objectives. Lions Center also helped Julianne make the connection to a major Bay Area employer: Facebook. Julianne is now employed full time as a Speech and Audio Analyst at Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park. She says, “The Lions Center has given me confidence to go back to work as a low vision person.” Support our client employment efforts! In the past three months nearly 40 Employment Services clients had eight job offers, 18 job interviews, five informational interviews and eight mini-internships!
