630 E. Hyman, Aspen. This building was designed in 1969 by Tom Benton, a local icon known for his printmaking skill and personality. This flat-roofed building represents the Wrightian aesthetic in its exploration of, and delight in, the nature of the materials—wood, concrete blocks and glass. The use of geometric forms, such as the large-scale horizontal second story cantilevered over the open first floor and the prominent round central window on the Hyman Avenue façade, reiterate themes and materials of Benton’s studio to the west on Hyman. By the way, the view from the penthouse isnt that hot now that the new Aspen Art Museum is across the street!
