6TH NATIONAL COFFEE SUMMIT SET IN OCTOBER The Philippine Coffee Board Inc(PCBI) has announced the highlights of its 6th National Coffee Summit to be held on October 21, 2013 at the AIM Conference Center. Its past successful meets have given rise to many new coffee farmers especially in the Visayas and Mindanao areas. “We are encouraged by the results of our past summits,” says PCBI chair Nicholas Matti. “Many new coffee farmers are born every year especially in the Visayas and Mindanao areas, “ he continues. The non-stock, non-profit organization will also bring an international coffee cupping expert from the world’s largest buyer of specialty coffees, the Neumann Gruppe. The lady Q grader (the highest rank for coffee tasters) is a Filipina by birth but who has since lived in the USA and pursued a career in Coffee Cupping for Quality. “I met Kat Mulintapang through the International Alliance for Women in Coffee” says PCBI president Chit Juan, a strong advocate for women entrepreneurship and empowerment through coffee. “She will definitely change our mindset about coffee tasting and cupping” says Juan. “She cups 75 to 80 different coffees each day, from different parts of the world. You cannot do better than that!” Juan exclaims. Expected to also present their successful enterprises are Dr. Ulysses Valdez of Iloilo, Jim Milabo of Negros Occidental. Ed Luardo of Bohol Coffee and Cacao Cooperative and Leo Echauz who will present Coffee as a Diversification for Cane Sugar, given that the APEC integration in 2015 will impact many sugar farmers. Interested participants are encouraged to contact PCBI as soon as possible to reserve seats to the conference. Many cooperatives, local government units and allied industries like banks and fertilizer suppliers are also expected to network with the coffee community in this annual event.
