6th July 2014. In a continuation of the Community Elephant Fodder Plantation program launched with villagers along the Nagaon-Karbi Anglong border last year and continued this year, Green Guard Nature Organization members led by Dulu Bora, Satyam Naik and Bifal Naik led a number of villagers from Lungsung, Ghilalota and Kothalguri to plant Bhim kol saplings at Hodhodi. A total of 225 Bhim kol saplings, a species of giant banana relished by elephants were planted at the site close to the Swang RF. In earlier campaigns, stumps were also planted, but it was seen that some new sprouts were eaten up by hares, deer, etc. Besides it was also easy to carry the saplings to the selected site and saplings are readily available at this time of the year. As most schools have the summer vacations, several children from these Human-Elephant conflict affected villages also joined the program. Sanctuary Asia Tiger Defender Dulu Bora took the opportunity to educate and inspire them on the need to protect the elephant and other wildlife their forest habitat. He also dwelt on the consequences of rampant deforestation on the fringe forest communities.
