7-17-13 Humble and Contrite in Spirit Is. 66:1-4 The LORD says: Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool. So where could you build a house for me, and where could my resting place be? 2 My hand made all these things and brought them into being, says the LORD . Isaiah received this magnificent word from God. God reveals to Isaiah that the true “temple” or resting place for God is not a physical building or place on earth. A rock or a mountain, though a reflection of the magnificent beauty of the creative spirit of God, is not the dwelling that God chooses. A mountain, lake, a forest or waterfall cannot express love. But, the heart of man can communicate love to God and mankind. Is. 66 But here is where I will look: to the humble and contrite in spirit, who tremble at my word. God dwells in a humble, contrite spirit. A contrite spirit feels or shows sorrow and remorse for a sin or shortcoming. A mountain, river or forest does not act or communicate. It just exists. God created man with the ability to interact and communicate with Himself. Is. 66 3 The one who slaughters an ox kills a person; the one who sacrifices a sheep breaks a dog’s neck; the one who makes a grain offering offers swine’s blood; the one who burns incense blesses an idol. The same person who killed the animal for sacrifice and worship may turn upon man and kill him. This is offensive to God. We cannot defy God’s commandment ‘thou shall not kill’ meaning murder of man and worship God without a contrite heart. There are things that God allows man to do and things not allowed. We cannot take God for granted and do those things forbidden. Is. 66 All these have chosen their own ways, and prefer their detestable things. 4 So I too will choose to punish them, to bring horrors upon them, since I called and no one answered. I spoke and no one heard, but they did evil in my eyes. What I didn’t want, they chose. In our brokenness and sorrow for our sin we can find redemption. God calls us but if we refuse to listen, we face punishment. God said this when He gave man the 10 commandments-notice they are ‘commandments’ not suggestions: Duet 5 32 So you must carefully do exactly what the LORD your God commands you. Don’t deviate even a bit! 33 You must walk the precise path that the LORD your God indicates for you so that you will live… My prayer for you today is that you know that God despises sin but Psalm 51 reveals this: 15 Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will proclaim your praise. 16 You don’t want sacrifices. If I gave an entirely burned offering, you wouldn’t be pleased. *17 A broken spirit is my sacrifice, God.
