The New Old-Fashioned will be performing at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Greene County Fair as an opening act for McGuffey Lane. Band members include Tom Blackbern on bass and vocals, Kent Montgomery on guitar and vocals, Matt Oliver on drums, and David Payne on guitar and vocals. The band was asked to the play the fair after Amy Test, Fair Board member, heard the band at Nick’s. Test asked the band if they’d be interested in playing the fair. “I think we are a little different than what’s normally at the fair, but people who go to the fair will still like us,” Payne said. The group is influenced by bands including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Beatles and The Old 97s. Their sound, which is described as alternative country, mixes modern tones and melodies with old-school country. The name of the band is a throw back to the sound they want to personify. “It [the name] goes back to that alt-country feeling,” said Blackbern. Alternative country as a genre became popular in the 90s. Some of The New Old-Fashioned’s influences are from that time period. The term is used to differentiate bands that are alternative and those that are more pop country or mainstream. “It’s hard to explain. It’s modern but sounds like classic country as compared to today’s country. It’s still modern-sounding, but closer to Hank Williams than Hank Williams Jr.,” Payne said. All the members of the band hail from Xenia and have been playing music for well over a decade. The songs are described as painting a picture of life in the Midwestern United States. Payne said that the songs are supposed to show what goes on in the band’s hometown. “When I was writing the songs, a lot of them were songs that were rooted with coming to terms with where I’m from and how I’m now proud of it,” he said. The New Old-Fashioned’s 2012 self-titled debut was recorded in Nashville with producer Patrick Himes, originally from Dayton. In a time where making music and publicizing it can be done from home, the band wanted to take a more traditional route with their album. “It’s better because now anyone can make a record. You can make a record in your living room, but we wanted to do it the old-fashioned way in the studio,” Payne said. The band said they have gotten great response from their first album and are planning a trip back to Nashville in August to record songs that didn’t make the cut for the first album. It will be available as a 7-inch vinyl record. Later, the band plans to write new songs and possibly come out with a second album next year. The first album is available on iTunes and Amazon, as well as local music stores including Omega Music in Dayton and Toxic Beauty Records in Yellow Springs. The band also sells them at their shows. The New Old-Fashioned plans to continue touring and playing shows throughout summer, so be sure to stop at the Grandstand for a chance to hear the band’s distinctive sound. The band can be contacted on Facebook or through email at newoldfashionedmusic@gmail.
