7/27/14 Q&A That Matters Part 3: Romans 3:21-26 by Dr Joe K Taylor, Senior Pastor, South Reno Baptist Church REVIEW: A. The Great Physician’s diagnosis of the condition of humanity is bleak: All are sinners without exception. B. We are sinners by character and conduct. We are all under condemnation apart from Jesus Christ. C. The Biblical prescription of sin is confession, repentance, making it right (if possible) receiving God’s forgiveness while forgiving ourselves and others. D. “The height of spiritual maturity is forgiveness. We are never more like Christ than when we forgive.” – Dr. Roy Fish ~ The Summary Question in Today’s Passage: Q: How does God save a person? A: God saves by His grace through our faith in the sacrifice of His son, Jesus Christ. The Saving of Man 1. We are saved by faith. (vv. 21-23 tells us of our redemption) STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 3:21–23, HCSB - 21 But [oh, I love that conjunction….it cancels everything before it] now, apart from the law [it has no role in “redemption” except to let us know we need redemption], God’s righteousness has been revealed —attested by the Law and the Prophets 22 —that is, God’s righteousness [how do we get it?] through faith in Jesus Christ, to all who believe, since there is no distinction [Jews and Gentiles both must approach God on the same terms]. 23 For all have sinned and fall short [lit., miss the mark] of the glory of God. [“It is the straightedge of the law that shows us how crooked we are.” – JB Philips] 2. We are saved to freedom. (v. 24 tells us of our justification) STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 3:24, HCSB - 24 They are justified [lit., declared not guilty—“It’s JUST AS IF I’D never sinned”] freely [lit., “for no reason”, without a cause, no strings attached, meaning “we did not deserve it.”] by His grace [the unmerited, underserved, and unearned favor of God] through the redemption [Gk: ἀπολύτρωσις, a-polo-tro-sis, def., “to set free, once-and-for-all, after the payment of a ransom”; our deliverance from sin and its penalties, is by the payment of a price—the shed blood of Jesus] that is in [because of] Christ Jesus. Ephesians 1:7, NASB95 - 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 3. We are saved for forgiveness. (vv. 25-26 tells us of our ransom) STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 3:25–26, HCSB - 25 God presented Him as a propitiation* [Gk: ἱλαστήριον, hil-as-ter-ion, def., ”an appeasement or a satisfying”; the root of this word was used as the name for the cover of the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of Holies, which was sprinkled with blood on the annual Day of Atonement; Christ’s sacrifice satisfied God’s holy law, thus making it possible for God to forgive sinners and remain just to Himself and His law] through faith in His blood [His saving work on the cross], to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His restraint God passed over [lit., disregarded] the sins previously committed [Important: We have been forgiven of our sins and our sinful nature] . 26 God presented Him [on the cross] to demonstrate His righteousness [that must judge sin] at the present time, so that He would be righteous and declare righteous the one who has faith in Jesus [I.e., all believers]. Luke 18:13, NIV84 - 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy [translates the Gk. word ἱλαστήριον], on me, a sinner.’ Life Application Section: “Salvation—given, never earned” • Propitiation. • Redemption. • Justification • Jesus gave His life for us. • Jesus saved us. • Jesus forgave us A. Say His name! His name means something: “Jesus” means “The Lord Saves.” B. Say His name! Jesus is the only way to obtain salvation. Acts 4:12, NIV84 - 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name [but JESUS] under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” C. Say His name! Jesus can save you today—right now. Romans 10:9, NIV84 - 9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
