7/3/14 (Thurs) SELECT THE WEAK Luke 2:8-20 There were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. —Luke 2:8 The birth of Jesus was amazing news. But who were the first to hear this great news? Shepherds. The angels brought the news first to lowly shepherds. Because shepherds were out with their flocks for months at a time, they often did not take part in religious ceremonies or worship. As a result, they lived on the fringe of society. They were also regarded as lowlifes and liars. But God chose to announce the birth of his Son through these people first. The Bible has many stories in which surprisingly ordinary people do surprisingly great things. David, another shepherd, defeated the giant Goliath (1 Samuel 17). Moses—with all his doubts—led his people Israel out of Egypt (Exodus 1-12) . Gideon and just 300 men conquered the enormous army of Midian (Judges 7). And one young slave girl convinced Naaman, a Syrian army commander, to go to a prophet of God for healing (2 Kings 5). This is how God works. God uses the foolish, weak, and lowly to complete big tasks on his behalf (see 1 Corinthians 1:27-28). How do you think you rate? Do you belittle yourself for not being someone who really matters? Are you discouraged because you seem small and powerless—not big enough to make a difference in Gods kingdom? Then youre just the kind of person God wants! Take your place in Christs church, and serve him with joy! Prayer Father, we thank you that you do not see us the way the people in this world do, and that you value each and every one of us. Please let us always be useful to you. In Jesus name, Amen. chinesetodays.org/?d=7/3/2014
