7 DAYS LEFT. ONE WEEEEEEEEEEEK. Today puts us within one week till we get to watch the greatest sporting event that was ever invented. For the next 7 days I will do one player each day who has shaped the way I play soccer or has had the greatest impact on me loving the beautiful game. Todays epicness: Zinedine Zidane. I couldnt think of a better person to write for this than my friend Chris Marciano. We grew up playing together and watching this French master conquer team after team and make it look easy. Heres what he had to say: Zinedine Zidane. Skill, power, vision. He had all of the qualities that define an attacking midfielder. Watching Zidane play was like watching an artist at work. With the innate ability to see things develop ten seconds before they happened, he would create space in a way no other player could. His ball and body control are still unsurpassed. Zidane would effortlessly bring a ball down in full sprint and already know where he was going with it next. But, what made his game so profound was how mesmerizingly simple and fundamentally sound it was. He didn’t need to dribble through the entire back line to create magic. Zidane could captivate an audience with his perfectly weighted passes, thundering long distance strikes and punishing headers. You want to talk about how he performs under pressure? He has scored the game-winning goals in both a World Cup final and a UEFA Champions League final. As a kid I tried to emulate all aspects of Zidane’s game because it was flawless. I am truly privileged to have watched him play this beautiful game and for that I must say, “merci Zizou”. Couldnt have said it better myself.
