7 Points Related to Fasting The 6 Days of Shawwaal 1. They are not compulsory but SUNNAH and optional to fast 2. They should NOT be referred to as the White days (Ayyaamul Beed). This description should be used towards fasting the 13th, 14th and 15th of every lunar month when the moon is full 3. The reward of fasting them is equivalent to having fasted the ENTIRE YEAR 4. You can fast ANY six days during the month of Shawwal (excluding the day of Eid) and they don’t have to be fasted consecutively 5. Unlike fasting the days of Ramadan, you DON’T need to have an INTENTION to fast them prior to Fajr/Subuh (break of dawn) 6. Fasting any missed days from Ramadan should be fasted before commencing the six days as the most beloved acts of worship to Allah are the obligatory ones. 7. One should NOT include any make up days of Ramadan being fasted this month as part of the six days with one intention for both. This is because the Prophet (salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) indicated having fasted Ramadan then following it up with Ramadan: Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and then FOLLOWS it with six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal, it will be as if he had fasted the year through. (Sahih Muslim) Notice the use of the word ‘follows’ indicating having fasted the entire days of Ramadan. (Note: There exists difference of opinion related to this point but not combining the intentions is safer. Fasting the missed days of Ramadan first then fasting the six days is more rewarding, for you would have fasted a total of 35 or 36 days instead of 29 or 30 says and Allah knows best) – Bilal Dannoun LIKE and SHARE the knowledge and rewards!
