7 questions 2 Shylah Vaughn : Where u from and when did u start to do music ? I was born and raised in Oklahoma City, OK. I’ve been singing since I was 7 years old and began writing songs at that age. I’ve always known I wanted to be a music artist. What was the first big musical moment in your life? When I was in the fourth grade, my teacher presented me with an award that said Junior Grammy Award at an academic awards assembly. I had no idea she was going to do that but it made me so happy to have my talent acknowledged. I used to sing in my classes in grade school and Ive pretty much always sang. Which artists influenced u in particular and why? I was/am heavily influenced by artists such as Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, Prince and Michael Jackson. Those are all heavy hitters in the industry that I grew up listening to. Donny Hathaway has a smooth, soulful, pain filled voice that completely mesmorizes me. Stevie Wonder is a muscial genius who has no boundaries musically. Luther Vandross also has a supremely smooth voice that is so genuine and gentle yet powerful at the same time. Mariah Carey has a vocal range out of this world and she taught me to get my skills up vocally. She has been in the game since I was ten years old and is still going strong. Longevity is a huge blessing for any artist. Prince is also a musical genius. He has completely mastered all facets of the artform we call music. He is a true musician and vocalist. Michael Jackson is the complete and ultimate package as a performer and artist. I believe he has influenced more music artists than anyone who has ever done it. He was a humanitarian and has many inspirational songs. He was the greatest and there will never be another like him. Whats your idea about todays music industry? The music industry today has completely evolved and it has its pros and cons. I like the fact that these days it is easier for an artist to independently get their music out all over the world without the aid of a record label. However, the number of people who actually buy music has dramatically decreased as it has become so available on free music sites, some legal and some that are not. When did u meet Tom Glide and TGee Records? It has now been almost a year since I met Tom Glide online after he heard some of my music on Soundcloud. I am so appreciative that Tom heard something in my voice that made him want to work with someone so far away that wasnt already well known. Tell us about the Soul Life track ? Tom sent me a track that he titled Soul Life and I found myself writing/creating something that has a different sound then what I had been used to. This experience pushed me think out of the box and Im so glad that I did that. The song was written about the soulful feeling of the instrumentation in the track and the power that music has to move you in whatever direction its going in. What are your hobby outside of music ? Although music is my first love I enjoy watching movies and going to listen to live poetry/music. I dont really deviate much from music. Um...well lets see...I like taking long walks by the lake lol.
