70 years ago today, my mother and her three sons aged 3 months, 2 years (me), and 4 years boarded the SS Monterey, a ship that had been taken over by the U.S. Government to ship troops to the war in the Pacific. We were among the first civilians allowed to return to Hawaii from San Francisco since Pearl Harbor. We were on the way to meet my father who managed a pineapple canning factory in Hawaii.
