72 years ago today -- Oct. 16, 1941 -- marked the height of whats been called the Moscow Panic, when it appeared that Hitlers armies would capture the capital of the Soviet Union. German patrols were only a few miles out, close enough to see the spires of the Kremlin. As Moscow looked like it might fall to the Germans, Soviet Union dictator Joseph Stalin was seen sitting in his office muttering to himself, What shall we do? What shall we do? Two days later he prepared to board his train to flee to the safety of the Ural Mountains but decided at the last minute to stay and fight. By the end of October 1941, 2 of the 4 million Russians in Moscow had fled in what they called The Big Skedaddle. freerepublic/focus/f-chat/2793496/posts
